Last week I got my new phone, the TyTN II. It’s the successor of my previous phone, the Qtek S100, which I enjoyed much. The reason for me to choose this phone, is that I like Window Mobile, because of it’s perfect integration with Outlook and Exchange. The TyTN II is one of the best Windows Mobile phone on the market, at the moment, so that was an easy match.htc-tytn-2

I also didn’t had a car navigation, but needed one badly. This phone has GPS build in and is delivered with TomTom. The TomTom software only added one citymap for free, so I directly bought the map Western Europe from TomTom and downloaded into my phone. I tested the car navigation and it seems to works great. The GPS found 6 satellites right away, so no external GPS is needed.

The map of Western Europe is almost 1 Gb, so the 1 Gb memory card delivered with the phone was full. I immediately bought a bigger memory card and now I’m the proud owner of 8 Gb. So I have 1 Gb for the map, 1 Gb for music and podcasts and 6 Gb for… ehhh… something.

When I use a Windows Mobile phone for the first time (or gave it a hard reset), I always change some settings and perform some tweaks. I normally do this by hand, but now I found a CAB from Paul, which does must of the things I want. For instance, it adds a Music tab to the HTC Home plug-in and automatic disables my phone after one minute. Don’t know why this isn’t enabled by default, because it save a lot of energy. Windows Mobile phone are not known for there long stand-by time.

The only problem I have is that the phone doesn’t feel faster than my old phone (which is more than two years old). The switching from landscape to portrait is for instance very slow, you see the screen being built up, icons appearing slowly, when pausing music it does this with a delay. It is sometimes slower than my old phone! See the video below, witch compares the TyTN II with an older model and you can see clearly that the old model is rendering faster.

It seems the hardware isn’t the problem, but the non-optimized drivers. Hopefully HTC will create the optimized drivers, so I can enjoy the phone even more!
